Clinical Patient Care: CCMA Medical Assistant topic guide
Clinical Patient Care carries 54% of the CCMA Medical Assistant blueprint used in this course, the largest of its 7 weighted areas. The course teaches it in 5 study units: Phlebotomy Order Of Draw, Asepsis Ppe Infection Control, Injections Pharmacology, Ekg and Vital Signs.
Common mistakes in Clinical Patient Care
- The light-blue coag tube does not need to be full. WRONG — It MUST fill to the line — the 9:1 blood-to-citrate ratio is required; under-filled = rejected.
- All injections go in at 90°. WRONG — ID = 5–15°, SubQ = 45° (or 90° w/ short needle), IM = 90°. Only IM is straight in.
- Dorsogluteal is the preferred IM site. WRONG — Ventrogluteal is now preferred for deep IM; dorsogluteal is AVOIDED (sciatic-nerve/artery risk).
- A pulse of 110 and a BP of 140/90 are normal for an adult. WRONG — Normal pulse 60–100; normal BP <120/80. 110 bpm and 140/90 are ABOVE normal — report them.
- Medical asepsis and surgical asepsis are the same thing. WRONG — Medical = REDUCE microbes (clean); surgical = ELIMINATE all microbes incl. spores (sterile).
- PPE goes on and comes off in the same order. WRONG — DON: gown→mask→goggles→gloves; DOFF: gloves→goggles→gown→mask. Gloves last on, first off.
- Alcohol hand rub is fine for C. diff. WRONG — C. diff (and visibly soiled hands) require SOAP AND WATER — alcohol does not kill spores.
- All four cardiac-arrest rhythms get a shock. WRONG — Only VF and pulseless VT are shockable; asystole and PEA get CPR + meds, NOT defibrillation.
- V1 goes on the LEFT sternal border. WRONG — V1 = 4th ICS RIGHT sternal border; V2 = 4th ICS LEFT sternal border.
